The Silent Tempest Book 2 Embers of Illeniel Volume 2 Michael G Manning 9781512158809 Books

The "hero" is broken. Even the author admits it through some of the many long soliloquies the hero agonizes through.

And that is the problem. Daniel is such a broken and hateful character that it becomes increasingly difficult to be interested in what will happen next.

The rest of the cast isn't treated much better. Lara disappears for extended sections of the tale. Daniel's children are never given enough page time to really develop beyond a certain point and the love of his life seems to be there mostly for the author to find ways to abuse her gentle and caring nature.

The villains aren't any deeper. There are plenty of hints as to their real nature, but I couldn't get past the lack of any real motivation for the villains. The idea of intelligent trees who have humanoid "seeds" is interesting, but I couldn't figure out how or why the rest all came into being. I read it, and I could if I wanted nod like a bobblehead and say "Yes, I get it.", but while I understand what Michael Manning was trying to create, it just doesn't sing to me. I felt that it lacked a real foundation and forced the plot to unfold a certain way.

It just left me thinking that there had to be more and there wasn't.

I can understand the 5 star reviews. I just don't agree with them. This story will be a one time read for me, its been removed from my Kindle. It's interesting, but I just can't recommend it highly.

The Silent Tempest Book 2 Embers of Illeniel Volume 2 Michael G Manning 9781512158809 Books Reviews

I've never seen emotional turmoil and the darker side of human nature written so well. The first book in this series was a truly great read and this one somehow managed to top it. I actually felt myself more emotionally invested in some of the characters in this book than I did with the first one. It's a credit to the author that he can pull you into the story and characters so well that, even though there is so much death and violence in these books, you can't help but feel hope for certain characters and really pull for them despite the odds stacked against them, even if you think you know the outcome. Turns out I was backing the wrong character, but that just goes to show how unpredictable this book is. That being said, while the atmosphere of the book is dark and very bleak at times, it isn't without hope. We're shown a more in depth look into some of the characters and the society and history of the She'Har and it may change your personal view of some of the characters you thought you hated (it did me!).

In short, I loved every moment of this book, even the times when I hated it. Michael G. Manning has a real talent for character development and story telling. This is only the second book of his that I've read and I'm already hooked. I'll be picking up his Mageborn series next.
The second installment of the Embers of Illeniel continues the story of Tyrion, formerly a gentle shepherd boy sexually abused by the mother of the girl he loves. That abuse, along with a power he was just coming into and does not understand changes the course of the rest of his life and from this the line of the House of Illeniel is born. The story is sometimes dark, brutal and bloody, but also shows the human spirit and determination and shows that sometimes the worst characteristics of humankind can also beget the best. This story held my interest throughout and shows Manning's talent for storytelling at his best. I will be waiting in anticipation for the next book in this series. Great read. Thanks again, Michael, for this highly entertaining story.
The second book of the Illeniel loses a little of that raw edge and desperation that made the first so great. It gains more of the emotional turmoil; that am I a bad guy or am i just doing what i must, which marred the first. Don't get me wrong emotional impact is a must in a gripping read but someone spending 40? years figuring out he isn't to blame for making the best of the conditions his masters impose on him is a little tiresome.
It's still a good book. There is plenty of action, although its a little less immersive as it doesn't really happen directly to our protagonist and when it does he is now so over powered as to make most challenges more a matter of tasks than life or death page turners.
Overall it retains enough of the first book to be worth reading but moves far enough towards Michael's other work, over powered with supporting cast interchangible and underdeveloped, to be a little disappointing too.

I will probably read the third but unless the quality reverses direction then that would be my last.
Just fantastic. This series is turning out to be my favorite of the three. If you enjoyed the first book in this series, you will love this one. While the content is dark in some places, the human emotion that emerges within Tyrion with regards to his children gives the reader hope. I found the character development to be outstanding in this book which resulted in a satisfying and speedy reading.

I think it's fascinating how Michael G. Manning has created three separate series that all revolve around each other. You get a feel for the characters and the world they live in when you read the "Mageborn" series. Then towards the end of that series you go, "Wait, tree people?" Then he gives us "Embers of Illenial" and takes us back in time 2,000 years and you start to understand some of the secrets and mysteries that are scattered through out the first series. Then, just to keep us on our toes, he writes "Thornbear" , which is also awesome, and alternates books between characters from the past and the future.

Such a talented author. I can't wait to read the conclusion.
The "hero" is broken. Even the author admits it through some of the many long soliloquies the hero agonizes through.
