The Room A Novel Jonas Karlsson 9780804139984 Books

''The Room'' is an absorbing short story, written by Jonas Karlsson, a Swedish actor (''Beck'', ''Death of a Pilgrim'',''The Fourth Man'') who seems to juggle more than successfully professional acting and writing. This is a claustrophobic story dealing with various themes such as the nature of existence, its relation to the space dimension as well as the source of human inspiration. Karlsson writes in a plain and simple prose which is easy to follow and allows the reader to devote his attention to the irrational side of the story and its potential interpretations and meanings, a fact that reminds the reader the work of Franz Kafka and the absurdist artists like Samuel Beckett and Ionesco. ''The Room'' is a book that should be read by all as it concerns each and every one of us. I am eagerly waiting for the future novels by J. Karlsson, hoping that they will cause more intellectual engagement than this one.

Love this type of book
I love dthis book. Clever, quirky and funny. A very unusual book taht I will read again. Perfect for anyone who has every worked in an office. And anyone who likes a clever funny read
This book was more than I had expected. I couldn't stop thinking of Bartleby, the Scrivener. Well-written and kept my attention throughout. VERY interesting protagonist. I am recommending it to my other writing friends.
Really, really interesting story line told by the main character whose mind operates at a furious pace. When I found out that the writer is an actor I was not surprised. A short read, a fascinating journey of one man's perception of his world.
This is an ostensibly whimsical, but ultimately dark and disturbing, book. It is also fast and fun to read, especially if you like whimsy, darkness, and disturbances. Although one can tell from the publisher’s summary and other reviews what the book is about, the minimalist plot isn’t really all that important. The attraction of the book is in Karlsson’s artful, simple, and straightforward way of portraying complex and elliptical psychological challenges in the workplace.
Bjorn goes to work for the Authority where he is given menial tasks to perform. There he discovers a secret room that only he seems to know about. His coworkers become suspicious of him, but he comes to believe that there is a conspiracy to keep him away from the room. This strange story is utterly captivating and so skillfully written that even readers who don't usually prefer weird tales will read it to its surprising ending.
A Swedish workplace offering glimpses of Franz Kafka, Terry Gilliam, Chuck Palahniuk, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
The extremely spare, neat prose suits this novella's entirely certain but highly unreliable narrator. There was a little less to grab onto than I might have liked, while some repetitive experiences (arguably necessary to show the day-in-day-out, dull horror of the modern bureaucratic workplace) felt as though they took up a disproportionate amount of space in such a slim volume. What's amazing is how clearly the characters are drawn, given the appropriately claustrophobic limitations the Karlsson imposes on the telling of his story.
